Automations let you run the Modem Agent without opening chat. You can run a prompt on a schedule or trigger it when a specific event happens.

How It Works

An automation is a prompt plus a run condition. In the dashboard, you choose a Type: Automations use the same agent capabilities you use in chat. Depending on what integrations you have connected and which tools you allow, an automation can post to Slack, send email, create Linear issues, link topics to GitHub PRs, or take other actions on your behalf. For trigger automations, Modem automatically passes the event details to the agent. You do not need template variables or special placeholders in your prompt. Just describe what you want done in plain language.
If your organization has a default output destination, a new automation starts with that destination as its only output. Otherwise, when you add Slack as an output, its destination mode defaults to Any internal destination. In that mode the agent can DM full members of your connected Slack workspace and post in internal channels Modem has joined, but cannot message guests, external users, or Slack Connect channels. Automations without a Slack output, including ones the agent creates for you, do not have this restriction. Emails can only be sent to members of your Modem organization.

Automation Types

Scheduled automations

Use scheduled automations when you want a recurring or one-time run.

Trigger automations

Use trigger automations when you want Modem to react as soon as something happens. Supported events today: GitHub and Stripe events only appear in the picker once that integration is connected. Group Added to Topic and Group Updated on Topic currently fire only for X conversations, and an automation using them must be limited to specific channels or products.

Creating an Automation

The easiest way to create an automation is to ask the agent: The agent will set up the automation for you, including the prompt and the automation type.

Creating an automation (manually)

1

Navigate to Automations

Go to Automations in your dashboard.
2

Create a new automation

Click Create Automation and choose Create manually. Give it a name and write the prompt you want the agent to execute.
3

Choose the automation type

Pick Trigger or Scheduled.
4

Configure when it runs

If you chose Scheduled, pick:
  • Daily for runs on selected days at a specific time
  • Repeats for runs every 30 minutes to 24 hours, on the days you select
  • Once for a single future run
If you chose Trigger, add one or more events. Some events can be limited to specific channels, such as GitHub repositories. To wait before running, set a Delay of up to 7 days under More Options.
5

Choose tools

Under More Options, the Tools row lists every connected tool, all turned on by default. Turn off any tool you do not want the automation to use.
6

Activate

Save the automation. Scheduled automations run at the configured time. Trigger automations run when a selected event occurs.

Managing Automations

The automations list shows each automation’s type, enabled status, recent runs, and last updated time. Scheduled automations show when they run. Trigger automations show the events they listen for. You can:
  • Pause and resume an automation without deleting it
  • Run Once to start an immediate run of a scheduled automation. Trigger automations only run when their event fires.
  • Edit the prompt, type, or tools
  • View run history to see past executions, their results, and any errors
