Get started with Modem by connecting a data source and exploring your user feedback. The whole process takes about five minutes.

## Prerequisites

* A Modem account ([sign up here](https://app.modem.dev) if you haven't already)
* Access to at least one place your users talk, such as Slack, Discord, Microsoft Teams, a support desk like Intercom or Zendesk, a
  call recorder, or email. You can skip this during onboarding and connect a source later.

## Step 1: Create Your Organization

After signing up, you'll create an **organization**. This is the workspace where your data sources, team members, and settings live.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Sign in to Modem">Go to [app.modem.dev](https://app.modem.dev) and sign in with your account.</Step>

  <Step title="Create an organization">
    Enter an organization name (usually your company or product name), a URL slug, and your company's domain, then accept the Terms of
    Service. The domain is required and must be a work domain, not a free email provider. Modem prefills it from your work email when it
    can.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Step 2: Connect a Data Source

Before you pick a data source, onboarding walks you through two short steps:

* **About.** Review and edit the context Modem drafted about your company and product. If Modem couldn't draft it, write a short company description yourself before continuing.
* **Agent.** Pick where your team will talk to Modem, in Slack or Discord. Modem also posts briefings and alerts there. If you skip this step, automations reach you by email instead. You can't reach the later steps until you connect Slack or Discord here or skip.

Then connect a data source. Start with wherever your users communicate most.

The same step lists support desks (Intercom, Zendesk, Pylon, Plain, Canny, Jira Service Desk) and call recorders (Gong, Fathom). See [Integrations](/docs/integrations/overview) for the full list.

How you connect depends on the source. Slack, Discord, Intercom, Zendesk, Jira Service Desk, Gong, and Fathom use OAuth and redirect you to authorize Modem. Microsoft Teams installs an app, Pylon, Plain, and Canny take an API key, and email needs no authorization. After connecting Slack or Discord, you'll select which channels Modem should monitor.

<Note>
  GitHub, GitLab, Linear, Jira, and Sentry aren't on this step. You connect them in the next step, **Ship**, so Modem can link feedback to
  what your team is building. Jira here means the issue tracker; Jira Service Desk is a data source and belongs on this step.
</Note>

<Tip>You can connect multiple data sources later. Modem correlates people across platforms automatically.</Tip>

## Step 3: Watch Your Data Come In

After connecting, Modem begins ingesting data. You should see data populate your account within about a minute and continue streaming in from there. Onboarding continues with three more steps: **Ship** (connect GitHub, GitLab, Linear, Jira, or Sentry), **Automate** (pick automation templates to install), and **MCP** (connect an AI client to Modem). Connecting a client is optional: click **Get Started** on the MCP step to land on the dashboard.

## Step 4: Explore Your Data

Here's what you'll find in the dashboard:

* **Topics.** AI-discovered conversation themes. Modem groups related messages into topics, even across different channels and platforms.
* **People.** Everyone who's interacted across your connected sources, with their feedback history, engagement patterns, and associated companies.
* **Companies.** Organizations identified from your connected sources, with aggregated feedback and engagement across their people.

## Step 5: Use the Agent

The Modem Agent lets you explore your data and take action using natural language. Open it from the dashboard or talk to it directly in Slack via DM or @mention.

<Prompt text="What are users complaining about this week?" />

<Prompt text="Show me feature requests related to authentication" />

<Prompt text="Ask Cursor to fix the login timeout bug" />

It can create tickets, delegate tasks to coding agents, set up automations, draft release notes, and more. See [The Modem Agent](/docs/features/agent) for the full list of capabilities.
